Social media influencers are often cultural performers, and Sharon McMahon, or @sharonsaysso, is no exception. McMahon has created a robust online community, called Governerds Insiders, with her objective to “educate, inspire, and empower.” 1.2 million public platform followers, 19,000+ private platform members, and numerous spin-off group members are an audience co-performing McMahon’s cultural performance. The sacrality of the space McMahon created for followers was threatened after the 2024 US-American election of Donald Trump when co-performers were left angry, confused, and polarized. My thesis research analyzes meanings underlying the cultural performance, audience co-performance, performative polarization, and the sociology of emotions. I present the analysis of this social phenomenon in a two-part case study – comparing the “pre- election” discourse with the “post-election” discourse of the same groups with thick description. My study contributes to cultural sociology by analyzing the meanings and cultural contexts of discourse on public social media platforms, in private social media groups, and the role of a social media influencer in shaping the discourse of her followers in a “digital” civil sphere.
