The aim of the diploma thesis Rewriting Mrs Dalloway: The City of One’s Mind is to analyse the main characters of three circadian novels–Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, The Hours by Michael Cunningham and Five Bells by Gail Jones–using the concept of the flâneur as a guide. The thesis consists of five parts. The first chapter deals with the image of the city in British, American and Australian literature from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The second chapter describes the figure of the flâneur and his female counterpart, the flâneuse. Focusing on the city, the novels Mrs Dalloway, The Hours and Five Bells will be analysed in the third, fourth and fifth chapter, respectively. The analysis will focus on the main characters’ perception of the city. The anticipated outcome is to show how the city enters the characters' minds and shapes their lives.
