Anotace

Hlavným cieľom tohto výskumu je analyzovať a porovnať tri študentské memoáre: Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution od Jiang Jili, My Name Is Number 4: A True Story from the Cultural …více

Zadání práce
This research focuses on students during the Cultural Revolution, a movement in China characterised by internal disruption and political struggle which paralyzed the country to a great extent (Fairbank, 1998, p.623). Students as the targeted group of the revolution play an important role. With the creation of Red Guards, millions of underage students become the key component of this mass movement (Fairbank, 1998, p.638). However not every student could become a member of the Red Guards as the membership was restricted to students with specific political and social background (Heaslet, 1972, p.1033). The main goal of this research is to analyze and compare four student memoirs with the focus on chosen events between the years 1966-6. As The Cultural Revolution still remains somewhat under-researched topic, the memoir accounts become a crucial source for understanding Chinas history by giving us firsthand experience and a strong emotional impact (Gao, 1995, p.49). The events analyzed in my work include the establishment of the Red guard movement, spread of big character posters, intellectual persecution, struggle rallies and destroying the „Four Olds“ and are all discussed in all four student memoirs. Therefore, my goal is to analyze and compare the ways in which these events are interpreted and described from the students point of view. Even though all four students have experienced them in some way, the narrative and attitude towards them varies. The chosen method for answering the research question is a qualitative method called comparative discourse analysis. This work will therefore examine the ways the events are told by the students and compare them, defining their similarities and differences. The purpose is to see how the same events are portrayed by a small sample of students based on the narrative and show the difference of their discourse. The focus will be not only on the interpretation and description of chosen situations but also on the emotions and responses felt.
