User Centric Observability with Frontend Telemetry
Anotace
Táto práca sa zaoberá chýbajúcou frontendovou telemetriou systéme YSoft AIVA. Navrhuje minimálne invazívny prístup na integráciu frontendovej telemetrie pomocou OpenTelemetry.js a Grafana Faro SDK. Funkčný prototyp demonštruje úplnú systémovú trasovateľnosť, spájajúc frontendové a backendové udalosti. Cieľom práce je tiež poukázať na užitočnosť telemetrických údajov pri prijímaní rozhodnutí založených na dátach v oblasti UX a biznisu.
Abstract
This thesis addresses the lack of frontend telemetry in YSoft AIVA's observability. It proposes a minimally invasive approach to integrate frontend telemetry using OpenTelemetry.js and the Grafana Faro SDK. A working prototype demonstrates full end-to-end traceability, linking frontend events with backend traces. The thesis also aims to highlight the usefulness of telemetry data for making data-driven UX and business decisions.
Zadání práce
Collect best practices for frontend telemetry, identify and suggest tools and libraries to easily extend existing frontend application with capability to generate, collect, and export telemetry based on the OpenTelemetry standard.
The thesis should be split into six parts:
1. An overview of the observability concept and best practices focused on frontend telemetry and end to end system observability used throughout the thesis.
2. Explain the difference between frontend telemetry and system observability.
3. Propose an approach to extend existing frontend code with telemetry in as non-invasive manner as possible. Explain any necessary trade-offs.
4. Provide prototype implementation integrated with YSoft AIVA frontend and extend the observability stack and monitoring dashboards to include frontend telemetry.
5. Demonstrate the integration of frontend telemetry into full system traceability on a particular user activity.
6. Showcase an example how frontend telemetry can contribute to quantitative user research methods.
