Modelling of epidemics is a well-studied area that requires the development of novel models due to the high variability of the diseases. The topic of the thesis is focused on the on-line modelling platform CMP (Comprehensive Modelling Platform) developed at the Faculty of Informatics. In particular, the main aim is to develop an instance of CMP called EPICMP that will be adapted to the needs of the epidemiologic data.
The theoretical goal of the thesis is to make an overview of existing ODE models used in epidemiology. On one end, the student will select a sample of significant models that will be used for motivation/evaluation/case study. An overview of the state-of-the-art in model repositories in epidemiology will be also provided. On the other end, the current version of the CMP platform will be explored with a specific focus on the coverage of relevant state-of-the-art technologies for processing of models including their annotation and curation. Finally, based on the obtained knowledge the student will specify requirements on the functionality of the EPICMP.
The practical goal is to design the EPICMP instance of the platform including necessary front-end and back-end extensions/modifications to the original CMP (e.g., pop-up notifications of data updates, support of simulations with events, etc.). The student will develop a prototype implementation of the EPICMP covering most of the specified functionality. Finally, the prototype will be evaluated on a case study using selected publicly available epidemiologic data/models (import of experimental data, implementation of models on EPICMP, demonstration of simulation/analysis tasks).
Technically, the EPICMP will be implemented by using the standard tools of web development (PHP/JavaScript, MySQL). The working version of the prototype will be made available in the domain fi.muni for the purpose of the thesis evaluation.
