Ghana is working on programs to ensure that all its citizens can access affordable, efficient, and environmentally benign energy sources. However, most of the government activities are geared towards the electrification of rural areas (and their connection to the national grid), with less focus on challenges urban dwellers face in the context of access to socially and materially necessitated levels of domestic energy services. The "bottom-up" approach (Middlemiss & Gillard, 2015), which examines the lived experiences of energy vulnerable, helps provide a more nuanced picture of the phenomenon, including its local specificities. This thesis aims to apply the "bottom-up" approach to broaden our knowledge about energy vulnerability in urban Ghana and suggest effective alleviation measures. In line with the approach, in-depth qualitative examination techniques will be used, especially face-to-face interviews and local observations. Accra has been chosen as a case study for its level of urbanization. Although energy vulnerability is more visible in both poor and middle-class communities in the city, the study will capture all strata of Acra's population to provide a comparative analysis of energy vulnerable among various households and communities.
