This thesis presents an attempt to set Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species and the theory that it introduces into the context of the thought of the nineteenth century Britain and to analyse the consequent reflexion of the impact of the theory in literature. Zadání práce
The thesis will describe the place of Darwin and his ideas in the history of thought of the 19th century Britain, with special attention to literature, namely Carrolls publication Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. First, a closer look will be taken on Darwin's argument itself, followed by a description of the circumstances of the publication of The Origin of Species. In the subsequent parts, the thesis will be focused on a short summary of reception of the book in British society. The last chapter will be dedicated to Darwin's direct and indirect influence on literature.
