Cultural heritage is an integral part of the future, therefore it is important to provide opportunities for their further development and preservation. The aim of this masters thesis is to describe the use and repurposing of the Dutch religious cultural heritage, mainly focusing on the church buildings closed due to secularisation. The first part of the thesis introduces definitions of cultural heritage, theoretical background concerning cultural preservation in the Netherlands, the main parties and legislation, the phenomenon of secularisation and repurposing of religious buildings and the dynamics of that strategy nowadays. The second part represents an analysis of ten case studies divided into different functions of social usage (as bookstores, hotels, office spaces, libraries, etc).
