This thesis explores how the lives of women in Taiwan have evolved across three
generations, from the post-World War II era to the present day. By focusing on three women; a
grandmother, a mother, and a daughter; from the same family, it examines how societal,
cultural, and economic transformations have influenced women s roles within both the
family and society. Central to this study is the investigation of shifts in the perception and status
of women in Taiwanese society and the factors driving these changes. The research delves into
how access to education and career opportunities has shaped these women ;s life
trajectories, as well as the impact of government policies, such as labor and family laws, on their
experiences. It also addresses changing societal attitudes toward marriage, motherhood, and

independence, highlighting the tension between traditional cultural values and modern influences
in shaping women’s identities and choices. Employing a qualitative research approach through
in-depth, semi-structured interviews, the study analyzes the narratives of the three generations to
uncover the impact of modernization, cultural shifts, and societal transformations on gender
roles, family dynamics, and individual aspirations in contemporary Taiwan.
