Generative AI in Education: Evaluating ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot for Study Guide Development

Oluwatoyosi Mercy Ayedun
Abstract

Generative AI technologies is now being adopted by higher education institutions worldwide to provide additional pedagogical techniques to teaching practices and to support student learning. However, the effectiveness in generating study materials has not been well documented despite the fact that several research have made comparisons to their capabilities. This study therefore investigated the effectiveness …více

Zadání práce
The master's thesis will explore the application of generative language models in higher education, focusing on the free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The study aims to assess their capabilities in generating study materials by conducting a literature review on their advantages, limitations, and specifications. The student will work with provided study resources, including lecture slides and relevant papers on the 4DOCMOD (Four Diamonds of Context Model), to evaluate the AI tools' effectiveness in creating structured study guides.

The research will analyze AI-generated content, ensure alignment with the lecture materials, and supplement the guides with insights from academic sources. The student will document the interaction process, including prompts used and outputs generated, to assess each tool’s consistency and pedagogical value. A comparative evaluation will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of AI-generated materials in terms of accuracy, coherence, and usability for higher education learning.

The final thesis will provide a detailed report on the application of AI tools, a comparative analysis of their effectiveness, and a set of study guides developed using these models. The research will contribute to the broader discussion on AI's role in education and its potential impact on learning methodologies by examining how these AI tools support study material creation.
