Abstract

This master’s diploma thesis focuses on the dramatic form of droll, a short comical sketch produced during the eighteen years of Civil War and Interregnum, as presented in the 1662, 1672 and 1673 collections The Wits, or Sport upon Sport. The MA thesis should focus on the development of drama, theatres and stage art after the closure of all theaters in 1642. The thesis will analyze selected drolls, short comical sketches that were using many themes and characters from the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. By comparison with the source texts the taste of the general public and the theatrical conventions during the Puritan Interregnum in England will be observed. Other genres of the period, such as the closet drama, will also be discussed.
