Anotace

Abstract

This thesis focuses on dental health in two Bronze Age populations from northern Syria: Tell Arbid and Tell Barri. It is based on the analysis of four main indicators of oral health like dental wear, caries, calculus, and enamel hypoplasia. The data were obtained from a previously paper-based archive, including over 130 individuals, 1525 teeth, and were transfered into digital formate using Excel. …více

Zadání práce

The transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age in the Levant brought significant changes in lifestyle, diet, and subsistence strategies. Increased trade, and the consumption of processed, carbohydrate-rich foods became more prevalent during the Bronze Age. These dietary changes contributed to the occurrence of various oral health issues.

Calculus, caries, dental attrition, and enamel hypoplasia have been recorded on over 500 teeth from 100 adults and 50 subadults buried at two Bronze Age settlements in Northern Syria (Tell Barri and Tell Arbid). The aim of this thesis is to complete the analysis by discussing the oral health indicators for each site individually, comparing the findings with other Bronze Age settlements in the region, and developing a dental database for the Levantine Bronze Age population, which will be finalized and made available online in the future.

The tasks of this thesis are:

  1. Create the Database in Excel From the Archives.
  2. Provide a Site-specific Synthesis of Oral Health Indicators.
  3. Discuss the Frequency of Each Oral Health Indicator per Tooth Type.
  4. Edit the thesis.

This thesis involves working with collected data (archive) and not with the archaeological teeth. At this stage, the data gathered by Dr. Kharobi during her research trip to the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw, using a well-defined methodology, is currently in paper format. This archive needs to be digitized into Excel sheets for more in-depth analysis and synthesis to ultimately answering the main research question of the thesis. The student will be given full access to both the methodology and the archives.

Manuscript and defense must be in English.

To be awarded credit for the first semester (course Bi4502 Bachelor Thesis I) the above stated tasks 1 and 2 need to be accomplished, and to be awarded credit for the second semester (course Bi6100 Bachelor Thesis II) the above stated tasks 3 and 4 need to be accomplished, therefore, to finish the thesis and hand it in for thesis defense in the IS Archive. The recommended extent of the thesis is 30-50 pages but can be exceeded if the thesis development requires it. However, the 30-page lower limit is the minimum which can be accepted. The thesis will exclude the explicit description of utilized material and methods, including in cases when the thesis is in form of a literature review. The method/process description will clearly state the author’s contribution to acquired results. Czech version of the ISO 690 style will be the citation style. Appropriate tabular and graphical summarizing and instructive illustrations will form part of the thesis. The thesis will be handed in the PDF format in the IS Archive and in print bound form for defense and archiving purposes. In the formal and content aspects the valid MU legislation, Dean’s Measure on final these and Department of Anthropology internal regulations must be met.
