The Regency Era had a very defined culture that differed from many of our cultures today. In this thesis, I would like to analyse and compare the societal constructs of Regency England, as depicted in Jane Austen's novels Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion against the contemporary landscape of Indian culture through Uzma Jalaluddin’s Ayesha at Last and general cultural observation. Using Austen's narratives as a lens, we will examine the intricacies of Regency England's societal structures, social mobility, gender roles, marital practices and ethical standards, as well as how they differ from those of contemporary Indian society. I'll use textual analysis and cultural observation to compare how Austen's themes and societal standards connect or contrast with present Indian culture. Using Hofstede’s cross-cultural dimension theory, I will analyse and compare the Regency culture and Indian culture. His ideas suggested 4 dimensions adjacent to which cultural values can be studied. With this comparative study, I’ll highlight the cultural changes and adaptations that have taken place over time. By taking a multidisciplinary approach using literary analysis, society’s viewpoint and cultural observation, I aim to illuminate the similarities and differences between these two cultures and explain the intricate relationship between societal rules, gender roles and traditional values that exist in the two cultures. I'll focus on how these values shift in a developing society that is becoming increasingly globalised.
