I want to argue that in order to rewrite Shakespeare successfully (meaning that the play will be staged more than once) the author has to use language in an innovative way, because that it what distinguished Shakespeare from his peers- that he was a master of language, and that the playwright needs to find a way how to relate the plot with the current events. Shakespeare made effective use of the fact that French was used in his contemporary England very often and this enriched his vocabulary tremendously. My thesis will focus on two plays: Roy Williams’ Days of Significance and David Greig’s Dunsinane which are responses to Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth. Both plays were written as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s initiative to commission youngish promising playwrights to write a play in response to any Shakespeare play of their choosing. Not only is the language in these plays more comprehensible for the current audience but both plays convey a message about language itself: Roy Williams uses modern lower class vernacular to comment on the noncommittal and easy come easy go aspect of the lives of the youths nowadays and David Greig observes the miscommunication between the Scottish people and the foreign English soldiers. While Days of Significance can be seen and understood by a wide range of audience even without prior knowledge of Shakespeare, one would miss a lot of important hints and allusions while watching Dunsinane without seeing Macbeth first.
