The thesis analyses intertextual treatment of Jane Austen as a literary and cultural phenomenon in Alice Oseman's debut young-adult novel Solitaire. Through quotes, narrative references and character dialogues, this novel inserts itself into multiple debates surrounding Jane Austen as not only a literary author but also a cultural icon in Western society - particularly, these debates are in traditional Austen criticism, feminist criticism, gender analysis and high v. low culture. The thesis showcases how Oseman paints a multifaceted image of the author as she exists in the current public consciousness. Solitaire is interpreted as both a Pride and Prejudice retelling and a unique piece of contemporary British writing in its own right.
