The Schengen Area is a unique union in the world in terms of border controls and free mobility of persons between different Schengen members. This area, which became the area of justice, collective security, and freedom, has been operating based on the remove of citizens' control at internal borders, consequently implicating a deferment of inspections at its external borders. The Schengen area has been affected by several crises that compromised the very existence of this free area. These significant crises revealed the weaknesses of the EU policies and the incapability to manage the growing crisis of the Schengen zone. The Schengen zone faces the problem of integration between the countries and apparent difficulty in establishing effective border control procedures to avoid a massive future crisis. This policy paper will find out where has been the flaw of policies that are not effective in the control of the crises and could be improved. This policy paper will compare and explain how other regions and states are dealing or dealt with similar problems and how their policies or actions differed from the strategies adopted from the Schengen zone. This paper will cover the state of emergency, region policies, the financial cost of each of the measures taken by the Schengen are and its states. This thesis will aim to find possible recommendation to crisis management and recommendation in terms of effectivity of financial, administrative and social cost, and how it can be implemented more organically.
