Canada is hard to define to the outside world. Some would argue that Canada always was a multinational state of at least two distinct nations, because of Québec. Others would answer that because Canada did not gain full independence from the United Kingdom until the year 1982, Canada is (or should strive to be) culturally turned to Britain. However, many people see Canadian to be synonymous with American. This paper takes Canada as a nation and, with use of a list of factors of national identity largely based on Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities, argues that Canadian nationalism has failed, if the country mainains status quo.
