Ukrainians in and out of the Czech Republic: Motivations, Meanings, and Future Trajectories

Bc. Tetiana O. Ivanova
Abstract

Return migration appears to be an underdeveloped topic within migration studies. With the change of political regimes in many countries, and with the rapid development of means of transport and communication, migration has become much more intense worldwide. These changes have transformed the Czech Republic, especially after it joined the European Union in 2004. Ukrainians are one of the largest ethnic minorities in Czech Republic. While some research exists on migration of Ukrainians into the country, the phenomenon of return migration is often left out of the focus. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to examine the return migration of Ukrainians (who have spent a considerable period of time in Czech Republic) in more detail. I consider the motivations underpinning their desire to go back to their home country, the peculiarities of re-adjustment, and migrants’ future intentions and life trajectories. The reaction of Ukrainians to policies aimed at migrants in Czech Republic, gendered patterns of migration, and the recent standing of returned migrants will also be examined. The study will be empirical, with application of qualitative methodology and methods, particularly in-depth interviews with returned migrants (planned for December-February 2010-2011).
