This thesis introduces a new way to speed up the development of YARA rules for malware classification. There have been many attempts to generate YARA rules for given files automatically, but they have shortcomings and generally do not work well. Thesis description
YARA language and its corresponding tool (https://github.com/VirusTotal/yara) are used to write detection patterns for malware detection and classification. Creation of detection patterns is a job for malware analysts. Automation in this domain can significantly ease the creation of new or modification of existing detection patterns. The thesis shall aim to create a system that will allow malware analysts to modify and generate detection patterns in the YARA language. Use of various heuristics will be proposed, designed, and implemented in this work, in order to provide machine-assisted creation of accurate rules. The thesis will be undertaken in collaboration with Avast s.r.o. The work will consist of the following steps:
  1. Familiarize yourself with the YARA language and tool and its use.
  2. Design the system for the interactive creation of YARA rules.
  3. Propose heuristics that will assist rule creation and evaluate rule quality during the process.
  4. Implement the most promising results from points 2 and 3 above.
  5. Evaluate the resulting system by malware analysts at Avast.
Technologies: C++/Python/JavaScript/TypeScript.
