Locator is a federated search tool for samples and data in the Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure – European Research Infrastructure Consortium (BBMRI-ERIC), a pan-European infrastructure of national biobank networks. The goal of this thesis is to explore and analyze the possibilities of exploiting provenance information, i.e., information about the origins and history of a described object, for the purpose of quality assessment of the Locator's responses to lookup queries. In particular, the student will:
1.  Become familiar with the Locator tool and current standards for provenance representation, including W3C PROV or Common Provenance Model.
2.  Identify quality dimensions relevant for the tool’s responses that are related to provenance.
3.    Explore the provenance information available in the Locator to determine how it can be used to enable quality assessment of query responses w.r.t. the identified quality dimensions.
4.    Propose an extension of the Locator tool to enhance quality assessment.
The textual part of the thesis will provide a detailed overview of the analysis results. The practical part will focus on designing an extension of the Locator's underlying data model (primarily using the aforementioned provenance standards) and architecture. The bachelor's thesis focus primarily on the analysis and does not include a programming component.
