This bachelor thesis deals with the credibility of the EU involvement in the Republic of Macedonia and its effect on the relation between ethnic Macedonians and Albanians in the country. Specifically, it aims to describe how the progress in the country’s integration into the EU influenced the implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement. The study also examines how the intensity of the violent conflicts between these two communities between 2001 and 2014 correlated with the integration process. It also includes basic guidelines for the EU policy makers on how to approach the issue of inter-ethnic relations in Macedonia in the future if they want to be more efficient in easing the ethnic tensions in the country. The thesis argues that the high level of credibility of the EU involvement is indeed necessary, though not sufficient, condition for peaceful cohabitation of the two communities in Macedonia.
