Course objectives
At the end of the course students will understand the principles of qualitative and quantitative research, basic techniques and rules for use in own research and will be able to use this information to create their own Bachelor's work. The students will be acquainted with fundamentals of ethics in research and publishing.
Learning outcomes
• The student has acquired basic information for independent writing of a scientific text;
• has been acquainted with research phases;
• has been introduced to basics of qualitative and quantitative research.
Syllabus
  • 1. Sience and approaches to definition: social vs. natural sciences 2. How to commence a research project: aims, research problems, research plan and its structure 3. Qualitative vs. quantitative research: differences, advantages and disadvantages 4. Quantitative research I.: hypothesis and operationalization, variables, causality vs. correlation, research sample 5. Quantitative research II.: methods of data gathering, unobtrusive data gathering methods 6. Qualitative research I: principles and traditions, embedded theory, ethnography, case study, data gathering 7. Qualitative research II.: analysis of qualitative data 8. Research ethics: informed consent, how to anonymize data, problems and issues in educational research 9. How to write a research paper: structure, information sources, citation 10. Project of bachelor thesis: guidelines of the Dean of the Faculty of Education MU, guidelines of the Department of Special Education 11. Tools of AI in academic writing
