Course objectives
This course is concerned with selected periods, genres and themes of the history of Czech cinema. The course is followed by Czech cinema II (spring 2009) focused on the “golden sixties”.

  • 1. Introduction to the history of Czech cinema 2. The silent era – Gustav Machatý: Erotikon (1929) 3. The sound era 1930-1945 – Martin Frič: Kristian (1939) 4. The Holocaust theme in Czech cinema I – Alfréd Radok: Distant Journey (Daleká cesta, 1949) 5. Czech historic movies between great epics and art or spiritual cinema I – Otakar Vávra: Witches' Hammer (Kladivo na čarodějnice, 1969) 6. Czech historic movies between great epics and art or spiritual cinema II – František Vláčil: Marketa Lazarová 7. The Holocaust theme in Czech cinema II – Ján Kadár, Elmar Klos: The Shop on Main Street (Obchod na korze, 1965) 8. The golden sixties: an introduction to Czech new wave – Věra Chytilová: Daisies (Sedmikrásky, 1966) 9. A time of servants: the normalization period and after 10. The velvet revolution and after 11. Contemporary Czech documentary 12. Various faces of Czech comedy – Oldřich Lipský: Lemonade Joe or The Horse Opera (Limonádový Joe aneb Koňská opera, 1964) Václav Vorlíček: The Girl on the Broomstick (Dívka na koštěti, 1971)
Assessment methods (in Czech)
The course is finished with an essay of 1500-2000 words, to be handed in by Thursday 10 December or sent by e-mail until 8 January. The essay should be done as an analysis of one Czech film (or two or three in comparison) or some special questions of Czech cinema history.
