Course objectives
The subject is designed so that it conveys the knowledge of selected legal institutes necessary for an efficient orientation in positive legal regulations. In the first thematic section students get familiar with basic terms and notions of the theory of state as the law and public authority warranter. The second section is devoted to a legal theory necessary for an orientation in the legal order and system. Special attention is paid to mechanisms of state power supervision, especially with respect to an individual (i.e., fundamental rights and freedoms, separation of power, principle of legal and democratic state). Students will get acquainted with the nature of law as a social phenomenon and with its functions. They will learn basic concepts of jurisprudence. They will learn how to use concrete sources of law in the Czech Republic so that they can interpret and apply legal norms in concrete situations. They will be able to orientate in the system of branches of law and their sequences. Thus the subject forms the basic amount of knowledge for other courses dealing with law.
