Course objectives
The course it aims to acquaint students with the management of insurance companies and its specifics under the conditions of insurance market in the Czech Republic. with economics of an insurance company. It deals with economic aspects of insurance companies’ business with the emphasis on technical provisions creation, investment activities, solvency, management and financial analysis of insurance companies. It explains the marketing management of insurance companies, selected market strategies in the process of strategic management, business activity and information systems used in the insurance business. The tutorial aims at students’ knowledge expansion by findings in the area of the management of insurance companies and basic aspects of functioning of the insurance companies‘ economy. It learns the basic factors affecting the competitiveness of commercial insurance companies as business entities. Students are able to acquire skills to be familiar with operating results of commercial insurance companies through the financial statements, master the requirements for adequate capital facilities and obeying rules in the sphere of technical provisions investment. Students will also get an overview of means of communication with clients when explaining the relationship management with users of insurance services.
Syllabus
  • Lecture (tutorial) topics: 1. Economic and legal aspects of insurance companies’ business in the insurance market of the Czech Republic. 2. Management of insurance companies in terms of the insurance market, functions of the insurance company, managerial functions. 3. Strategical, tactical and operational management of insurance companies. Specifics of insurance companies’ management in the insurance market of the Czech Republic. 4. The organizational structure of insurance companies, major tasks and the scope of activities of the insurance company’s economic section. 5. Economic aspects of insurance business, technical reserves creation, investment activity of insurance companies. 6. Capital facilities of insurance companies, capital stock, solvency of insurance companies, Solvency II, economic equilibrium of insurance. 7. Management of insurance companies, incomes, expenses and operating result, content of the annual report of insurance companies. 8. Financial analysis of insurance companies, classification of ratio indicators, audit and rating of insurance companies. 9. Marketing management of insurance companies, marketing analysis, definition of the mission, goals and strategy, marketing planning, implementation and control of the marketing plan. 10. Selected market strategies in the process of strategic management of insurance companies. 11. Public relations and insurance institutions. Customer Relationship Management (CRM). 12. Business activity of the commercial insurance company. Psychology of selling insurance products. 13. Information system and technology in activities of commercial insurance companies.

Lectures, seminars, control tests.
Assessment methods
The tutorials are composed of four blocks of 3 hours with the content corresponding to the lecture topics range, check tests and POT elaboration. The course is finished by a written test. The final mark constitutes of: the Final test (60%) + POT (20%) + Check tests (20%).
