Course objectives
The objective of the course is to select a thesis supervisor and formulate the thesis proposal, including initial orientation in the topic, literature, data, and methods.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- search for and analyze academic literature relevant to the thesis topic;
- formulate a research problem and the objective of the thesis;
- identify suitable data and propose appropriate methods for addressing the chosen problem;
- communicate effectively with the thesis supervisor and respond to feedback;
- prepare the thesis proposal in accordance with the formal requirements of the faculty.
Syllabus
  • The student is required to contact the thesis supervisor within one week of registering for the topic. If the student fails to do so, the supervisor may remove them from the topic and offer it to another student.
  • The supervisor sets specific requirements and awards the course credit.
  • The student must upload their output to the IS submission folder twice during the semester.
  • Submission deadlines are binding and published at the beginning of the semester in the interactive course syllabus.
  • The supervisor may define specific requirements regarding the format and content of submissions. The student is obliged to become familiar with these requirements and comply with them actively.
  • Example of standard requirements:
  • Checkpoint 1 (Week 9): Thesis title in Czech and English, objective of the thesis, draft structure (outline), list of relevant sources (preferably peer-reviewed academic articles).
  • Checkpoint 2 (Week 18): Review of empirical literature, proposal for data and methodological approach.

Teaching methods
An introductory group session (available online and as a recording) presents the course requirements and the thesis proposal process. Afterwards, the student works independently under the supervision of their thesis advisor, including consultations as needed.
Assessment methods
The course credit is awarded by the thesis supervisor based on the fulfilment of their specified requirements and the proper submission of outputs to the designated folders in the IS system. A necessary condition for obtaining the credit is the official thesis proposal entered by the supervisor into the relevant IS MU application, based on materials prepared by the student.
Náhradní absolvování
In the case of a study stay abroad, the student is generally expected to meet the same requirements as others, as consultations and submissions can be fully carried out online. In exceptional cases, an individual plan may be arranged with the supervisor.
