The Difference Between the Street Dance and Street Choreo Seminar Groups
The main difference between the Street Dance and Street Choreo seminar groups lies in the focus of instruction and the approach to dance material.
In the Street Dance seminar group, students systematically focus on individual street dance styles such as hip hop, house dance, locking, popping, new jack swing, or litefeet. Each style is addressed separately, with attention given to its fundamental principles, characteristic groove, work with rhythm, and typical movement elements. Emphasis is placed on understanding stylistic authenticity and the correct execution of basic techniques. Part of the instruction also includes the collective creation of a short routine composed of typical elements of the given style, which serves to reinforce the material in practice and to develop movement memory.
By contrast, the Street Choreo seminar group is primarily focused on the creation and development of dance routines and choreographies. Instruction is based on a specific dance style, whose movement material is then creatively developed into cohesive choreographic works. Students learn the basics of dance composition, particularly work with spatial organization (group shaping), movement phasing—understood as the conscious division of movement into individual temporal and dynamic phases—and smooth transitions between different shapes and formations. An important component of the instruction is also the use of so-called effects, meaning expressive and movement elements used to emphasize musical accents, the dynamics of the music, or a specific dancer.
The two seminar groups therefore complement each other: Street Dance emphasizes the technical and stylistic foundations of individual street dance styles, while Street Choreo develops choreographic thinking, spatial awareness, and the expressive component of dance performance.
