- Abstract
- To familiarize students with the process of infectious disease spread and the factors that influence its transmission.
To develop the ability to analyse the current epidemiological situation and to use the information obtained in practice.
To teach students how to design and apply repressive anti-epidemic measures when infectious diseases occur.
To provide an overview of the basic epidemiological characteristics of the most common infections.
To equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to apply standard and isolation measures in health care settings.
Explain the principles of vaccination and the importance of active immunization in the prevention of infectious diseases. - Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- understand and explain the epidemic process and factors affecting the transmission of infections. - use the information about current events and epidemiologic situations.
- create repressive anti-epidemic measures in outbreaks.
- master the basic theoretical and practical knowledge of infectious and non-communicable diseases epidemiology in order to implement preventive measures.
- give a reasoned decision in relation to the cumulative incidence of known infectious diseases and on the basis of acquired knowledge to derive anti-epidemic measures, even for those unusual situations, such as mutated viruses, and high contagious diseases, etc. - Key topics
- 01. Epidemic process; aetiology and risk factors of epidemic diseases.
- 02. Form of sources of infection.
- 03. Contagiosity in a particular stage of the disease.
- 04. Cariership of pathogenic microorganisms. Animals as a source of infection.
- 05. Transmission of infectious diseases, phases of transmission.
- 06. Susceptibility of the population to the infection, vaccination.
- 07. Global epidemiology, epidemiologic surveillance.
- 08. Principles of control of infectious diseases – elimination of the source, interruption of transmission of infectious agents, measures in a focus of infection.
- 09. Surveillance of nosocomial infections (NI), aetiology NI, risk factors of acquiring NI, sources and localization NI, the principles of control NI, decontamination, disinfection.
- 10. Epidemiological characteristics of the intestinal infections and prevention of their spreading.
- 11. Epidemiological characteristics of airborne infections and prevention of their spreading.
- 12. Epidemiological characteristics of blood infections and prevention of their spreading.
- 13. Hospital hygiene.

- INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLLOQUIUM:
Students registered for a specific colloquium date will miss it if: a-) they are late on the day of the colloquium.
b-) they do not appear for the colloquium and have not cancelled their enrolment for the date in the system in time (see IS).
In the event of failure to pass the colloquium, the colloquium may be repeated TWICE and only on the announced dates or by arrangement with the course sponsor.
If the student fails the colloquium on the third attempt (second retake), he/she must repeat the course in the following semester/academic year.
All questions in the colloquium are based on ALL REQUIRED LITERATURE, lectures.
Colloquium → Written test → 20 multiple choice questions
SCORE:
Pass → student correctly answered 12 or more questions (12 - 20) Failed → student answered 11 or fewer questions correctly.0 - 11) - Language of instruction
