- Abstract
- The main objective of the course is the following - to acquainte students with the basic terms of general zoology, basic information on onthology, zoogeography and origin of the fauna of the Central Europe and its changes. At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain principles of evolution and its classification and its basic rules. A substantial part of the course is represented by the review of the zoological classification with respect to the species of economic, cultural or conservation importance.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able after finishing of the course: - describe basic cathegories of the zoological system with its important taxonomical groups and their significant species - describe influences forming (middle) european fauna from postglacial period till the present - discuss basic principles of zoological systematics and explain actual zoological system - describe basic principles in ethology, including definition of the biological determination of the behaviour - describe influence of the fauna on the evolution of the human civilization (domestication)

Ethology and domestication - behaviour types, instincts, phasis of domestication. Welfare. Migration 3. Zoological systematics - system categories, classification theories. 4. Mammals - characteristics, main species. 5. Birds - characteristics, main species. 6. Chordates - fishes, amphibians, reptiles - characteristics, main species. 7. Arthropods - Tracheata - characteristics, main species. 8. Arthropods - Crustaceans - characteristics, main species. 9. Molluscs - characteristics, main species. 10. Ring worms - characteristics, main species. 11. Invertebrates. 12. Morphology, reproduction, onthogenesis. Embryonal and postembryonal evolution.

- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- The course is based on lectures, field excursions and individual work with the study resources.
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- Written examination. The written examination consists of open and closed questions and identification of animals. The test can be scored up to 60 points, 45 points from the test and 15 points from the identification. The assessment is based on the study regulations, i.e. to successfully complete the course, you need to score at least 60%.
