Course objectives
Students will learn how to design and evaluate environmental education and communication programmes. They learn principles for developing evaluation plans and apply new competence for designing an evaluation plan for a selected environmental education or communication programme.
Learning outcomes
After succesful finishing the course, students
- design their own environmental education program corresponding with relevant methodological frameworks;
- analyze the strong and weak points of a environmental education program theory;
- design an evaluation plan for a selected program;
- independently conduct the process of evaluation research.
Syllabus
  • 1. Programme theory. What are programmes and in what context they are used. Logic and process models. Psychological and educational grounding of a programme theory.
  • 2. Program analysis. Identification of the strong and weak points of a programme. Programme designing. Principles for designing a new environmental education, communication, or policy programme. Applying of logic and process models for programme design.
  • 3. Presentation and peer-reviewing of students’ new programmes.
  • 4. Programme evaluation theory. Evaluation areas: front-end evaluation, formative and summative evaluation. Utilization-focused evaluation. Stakeholders. Ethical aspects of evaluation.
  • 5. Evaluation cycle. Evaluation questions, designing of evaluation plans. Methodological approaches of evaluation, specific features of quantitative, qualitative, or mixed evaluation plan.
  • 6. Designing of instruments for data collection. Selection of evaluation questions, focus groups, questionnaires, tests, artefacts, programme documentation.
  • 7. Data analysis and interpretation. Presentation and communication of results to the stakeholders.
  • 8. Presentation and peer-review of students’ programs.
