Course objectives
The course deals with Czech politics at the end of 1980s and in the 1990s. Teaching is primarily based on chronological lines and combines the approach of contemporary history and political science.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to understand and explain the key moments and context of the birth of the Czech politics after 1989.

  • 1. Introduction; 2. Communist regime and society; 3. Charter 77 and opposition; 4. Birth of the Civic Forum; 5. Building of the new political regime; 6. Economic reform, privatisation and neoliberal Zeitgeist; 7. Lustrations; 8. Crises of the Czech-Slovak relationships; 9. Czech right-wing and left-wing parties and their leaders; 10. Evaluation of new democracy.
