Course objectives
The course follows up on Developmental psychology I. (PSY103). This course (DP II.) continues in interpretation of developmental stages from the school age to the old age. The theoretical developmental concepts, methodological possibilities of research are presented and students get acquainted with other current empirical studies results related to these developmental stages.
The course objective is:
- to critically use acquired knowledge of basic terms and principles of DP for better understanding of complex dynamic processes of psychological development and for understanding of developmental trends and principles of development, as well as for integrating this knowledge into the image of lifelong personality formation;
- to understand principles and characteristics of particular developmental stages in context of different developmental theories;
- to understand variability, uniqueness, specificity and general trends in development;
- to expand ability of methodological thinking related to research on intraindividual changes and interindividual differences and developmental trajectories in psychological development;
- to learn basic principles and characteristics which are typical for particular developmental stages from the school age to the old age;
- to learn how to interpret individual behavioral manifestations, experience etc., according to so called normative development and to learn how to explain those while applying particular theoretical approaches.
The course assumes:
- basic knowledge of human biology and anthropology, synthesis with knowledge from other currently studied psychological disciplines, mainly from the general psychology and social psychology, as well as from statistics and methodology;
- ability to work with scholarly sources (including electronic databases);
- the knowledge of the APA6th manual.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student will be able to:
- understand basic terms and concepts from DP;
- understand principles and characteristics of particular developmental stages in context of different developmental theories;
- include variability, uniqueness, specificity and general trends in development and take them into account when analyzing human behavior, experience, ability and skills;
- understand research methods focusing on intraindividual and interindividual differences in psychological development;
- use the knowledge of basic principles and characteristics typical for particular developmental stages from the school age to the old age for better understanding of human behavior, experience and their abilities and skills;
- interpret individual behavior manifestations and experience etc., according to so called normative development and be able to apply particular theoretical approaches for their explanation;
- compile the results of empirical research studies, review articles and meta-analyzes in the overview of the present knowledge („introduction“) from chosen field of developmental psychology;
- propose question for the empirical research in developmental psychology field;
- implement administration of developmental-psychological method.

  • Adolescence. Developmental theories I.: Theory of psychosocial development, adolescent egocentrism, theories of romantic relationships development in adolescence.
  • Emerging adulthood. Stage or process? Debating the "emerging adulthood" phenomenon.
  • Adulthood. Developmental theories II.: Evolutionary psychology, ethology, sociobiology, ecological model of development.
  • Aging and old age. Developmental theories III.: Emotional development, socioemotional selectivity theory,life-span theory, SOC model.
  • Applied developmental psychology.
  • Developmental theories and research: State of art.
