Course objectives
The course offers an introduction into the problematic of urban public space and approaches to it in sociology and related sciences. The first bloc will focus on the problem of public space and its varying analytic use. In the second bloc, the sociology and phenomenology of public space will be discussed. In the third bloc, the current developments in public space will be critically discussed with a focus on the processes of privatization, securitization and new public spaces.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to - understand the various approaches towards the study of PS - identify the main conflicts in and around the topic - design their own empirical research on the topic - critically discuss current transformations of PS
