- Course objectives
- In Fall 2002, the course will focus on key ideas and examples of the theory of social/functional differentiation, within the framework of a broader concept of modernization and social change. Starting with a short discussion of relevant themes in classical works by Marx, Spencer, Durkheim, and Max Weber, the major authors discussed will be Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann. Comparing these two authors, particular attention will be paid to distinctions between a functional theory of social systems (Parsons) and a social theory of functional systems (Luhmann). The two approaches will then serve as reference points for the following lessons. These will especially focus upon three areas of theoretical interest: 1) concrete historical examples of the differentiation process (like, e.g., art, bureaucracy, economy, education, family, law, politics, religion, private and public spheres); 2) possible connections between theory of social systems and phenomenological or hermeneutical analysis of everyday experience; and 3) possible normative aspirations of the theory of social systems.
