- Course objectives
- Students become known with the core concepts of the discipline. At the end of the course, students should be able to interpret clients live circumstances in terms of the concepts “living situation” and “social problem”, to distinguish between “questions on the client’s living situation” and “questions on intervention” as well as to compare the discourse by “social worker” and by “social policy maker”.

- The course is devoted to the following topics and issues:
- 1. Social work and social policy as helping professions.
- 2. „Uncertain interactions between man and society“.
- 3. „Living situation”.
- 4. „Social problem“.
- 5. Similarities and differences between social policy and social work.
- 6. „Cognitive context of understanding living situations”.
- 7. Typology of social work.
- 8. Subdivisions of social work.
- 9. Subdivisions of social policy.
- 10. The usage of research methodology ín social policy and social work.
- 11. Community work and the policy of social services – the intersections between social policy and socialn work.
- 12. Standards of social work education and the conception of studies in social policy and social work.
- 13. The conception of studies in social policy and social work in terms of the “living situation” concept.

- Assessment methods
- The course consists in lectures, writing an essay and group consultations concerning writing essays. The course is completed by exam which consists in elaborating the essay on: „The selected client’s living situation in terms of the theory, the social worker as well as social policy maker discourses”.
