Course objectives
This course will investigate how environmental communication processes like stakeholders meetings, environmental impact assessments, environmental education processes, environmental political debates can be facilitated. It will look into different possibilities of programming communication about environment, the "why"s and it will give students the chance to investigate and train their own facilitation skills. Goals - Participants know what facilitation is - Participants understand the complexity of process dynamics - Participants can programme simple environmental communication processes - Participants know basic technical tools in facilitation - Participants can facilitate in simple communication settings Times

  • PROGRAMME Introduction and basis -Introduction in the way this seminar will be run -communication processes, environmental communication processes, facilitation Programming environmental communication processes -elements of a good programme -programming formats and ideas Role of the facilitator and facilitation skills I Role of the facilitator and facilitation skills II Analysis of an environmental communication process and wrap-up EXAM The exam will test facilitation skills and programming an environmental communication process case

Teaching methods
4 interactive participative full day sessions 1 interactive exam
Assessment methods
Two full days, 10:00 - 17:30 on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 December 2009. One full day, 10:00 - 17:30 on Friday 18 December 2009. One full day in January (date to be set with students). Exam: in January or February. Students are expected to attend all blocks, as facilitation is not something that can be learned from books, but only by interaction. The methods used will be highly interactive and participative. The seminar blocks will not exist of lectures, but of interactive group work. Also students need to count with intensive homework between the seminar sessions. The complete seminar will take place in English. The course will be examined orally on the basis of the work done during the blocks and background literature.
