Course objectives
The course aims to introduce questions in field of selected social deviant phenomena that meet students of Social Policy and Social work in their common praxis. Students are informed both about fundamental biological, psychological, sociological and combined social deviant theories and about particular deviant individuals (the insane, self-murderers, homeless etc.) and groups of individuals (drug-users, delinquent offenders etc.). The purpose of these lectures is students will be able: (1) perceive topicality of selected social deviant groups and individuals sensitively and ascertain and reflect their importance in contemporary society; (2) identify governmental and non-governmental organisations intervening these target groups; and (3) put acquired theoretical knowledge through individual abilities and experiences to be able both analyze existence and reasons of various social deviant phenomena in social policy and social work and apply existing interventions against these individuals and social groups.

  • Introduction to the general phenomena of social deviance (scheme of work, defining deviance)
  • I. Social deviance theories Biological and psychological theories
  • Sociological theories I, - the chicago school: ecological approach and social disorganisation theory.
  • Sociological theories II, - structural functionalism: anomie and strain theory. Social control theory.
  • Sociological theories III, - social learning: differential association theory, techniques of neutralisation. Symbolic interactionism: labelling theory.
  • Sociological theories IV, - feministic and criminological perspective: critical and developmental criminology, and life cycle criminology.
  • Integrative theories: an integrated theoretical perspective on delinquent behaviour, control balance theory..
  • Ii. Social deviant behavior of selected invidivuals and social groups Mental disordered and behaviour disorder people.
  • Individuals and social groups with suicidal thinking and acting
  • Drug-users, drinkers and otherwise dependent individuals and social groups
  • Offenders and victims of vigilance criminality and related crimes

Teaching methods
Reading, homework, group work.
Assessment methods
Students read prescribed literature continuously, write test in half session and take an exam consisting from written part and oral presentation of essay at the end of the course. The aim of the essay is to test ability of students to apply selected social deviant theory to particular individuals or social groups that behave risky in field of social policy and social work praxis.
