Course objectives
The aim of the course is to offer students a basic view of the field of thanatology, primarily viewed through the prism of social sciences. The teacher aims to present the views of selected disciplines (especially social work, psychology, sociology, social anthropology and pedagogy) on issues related to the last things of human. The course will also include education in accompanying the dying, informal carers and survivors; including a summary of the offer of existing services, but also variants of self-care options in case one finds oneself in this kind of situation.
Learning outcomes
Graduate of the course:
- knows basic terminology in the field of thanatology;
- understands thanatological topics in the center of attention of selected social sciences (social work, psychology, sociology, social anthropology, pedagogy);
- is familiar with the services of the dying, their loved ones and survivors;
- knows the principles survivors' counseling

  • 1. Introduction to the subject; definition of basic concepts;
  • 2. Dying and death as a phenomenon in the history of mankind;
  • 3. Loss of a loved one - grief and mourning;
  • 4. Thanatology as a multidisciplinary field;
  • 5. Death as a topic of social work;
  • 6. Death as a topic of psychology;
  • 7. Death as a topic of sociology;
  • 8. Death as a topic of social anthropology;
  • 9. Death as a topic of pedagogy;
  • 10. Offer of services for the dying, their loved ones and survivors;
  • 11. Counseling for survivors;
  • 12. Techniques of confrontation with one's own mortality;
  • 13. Final summary
