Prerequisites

Although the course does not have any explicit prerequisites, it is a based on the basic knowledge from the bachelor's courses - in particular PSY259 Introduction to Psychometrics, PSY112 Research methods in psychology, PSY117 Statistical Analysis in Psychology and PSY252 Statistical data analysis II.
It is recommended to enroll this course before or concurrently with psychodiagnostic courses.
Students who have not completed PSY259 Introduction to Psychometrics are strongly advised to go through the course materials at the beginning of the semester. The content of the course PSY259 will form part of the exam.

Course objectives
The course focuses on methodological and statistical approaches to measurement in psychology, including their epistemological foundations, as well as selected methodological topics. Its aim is to describe the nature and characteristics of measuring psychological phenomena, the difficulties and obstacles involved, and to present the basic, commonly used measurement models in the social sciences. These more theoretical insights will be complemented by practical skills in the evaluation of psychodiagnostic methods and in handling measurement error in psychodiagnostic practice.
Learning outcomes
Students in the course will gain a theoretical overview of the basic procedures of measurement in the social sciences and more advanced measurement models, including their epistemological foundations. They will also acquire knowledge of selected methodological approaches and current developments in psychological methodology.

  • Basic concepts of measurement in psychology: validity, reliability, objectivity, standardization
  • Epistemology and philosophical foundations of measurement in the social sciences (2 sessions)
  • Modern approaches to knowledge construction, formalization of psychological theories
  • Replicability of psychological measurement, the credibility crisis in psychology
  • Item Response Theory and the Rasch model (2 sessions)

Teaching methods
Course consists of short, thematically based lectures and interactive class work. Individual work is supported via on-line discussion and concurrent feedback on group projects.
