Course objectives
The aim of the course is introduce the students to the selected figures and ideas of the classical period of sociology (from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century), when the foundations of sociology were laid. The course will demonstrate the relevance of the figures and ideas in the context of contemporary societies.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to identify basic ideas and theses in the selected readings, to interpret their meanings, to apply them on the social reality of contemporary societies as well as compare different sociological analyses of the life in modern societies.

Max Weber and the transformations of the spirit of capitalism 6. Vilfredo Pareto and the (ir)rationality of political life 7. Reading week 8. Georg Simmel and the ambivalence of modern life 9. Thorstein Veblen and the dynamics of consumer behaviour 10. Karl Mannheim and the conflict of generations 11. Georg H. Mead and the formation of individual identity 12. Norbert Elias and the mechanisms of disciplining emotions 13. Final reflection
