Kurz je věnován širšímu sociálnímu kontextu vývoje a fungování měst. Po stručném představení disciplíny následuje historicky laděná kapitolka o vzniku měst, na niž navazuje zevrubněji rozebírané téma urbanizace. Výklad dále sleduje rozmanité typy definic a klasifikací měst. Podrobněji jsou diskutovány otázky vnitřní strukturace městského prostoru, včetně; nástrojů;, umožňujících uchopit vnitroměstskou strukturu na základě; empirických dat. Kurz dále prochází okruhem komunitních studií a problematikou fungování sousedství. Čerpá z proudu tzv. nové (radikální, kritické) urbánní sociologie a nabízí též diferencované pohledy na městský způsob života. Poslední kapitola je zaměřena na problémy koncentrace marginalizované populace.
