Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with basic theses of modern motivation theories applied on school conditions. Positive motivation of pupil’s learning as one of the basic conditions of school achievement will be analysed in relation to programmes improving attention and developing creativity. Attention will be also paid to issues of assessing the level of pupils’ motivation to learn. Classes will be held especially as a problem-solving lecture with exercises and discussion. Students will also get practical experience with selected topics during an excursion to an alternative school or a special education centre.
Syllabus
  • Classes are held in six thematic blocks, always 4 lessons once every two weeks. 1. Psychology of motivation. Motivation in the educational process – pupils’ motivation and achievement, internal and external motivation. Motivating students by actualising particular needs – cognitive needs, social needs, performance needs. 2. Causal attribution and motivation of school performance. Learned helplessness. Importance of self-respect and self-concept. Perceived personal efficiency. Future-orientation. Goals and their importance for pupils’ motivation. Motivation to vocational selection. 3. Importance of outside factors for pupils’ motivation – school grades, motivational impact of awards and punishments, relationships to others. 4. Demotivating factors – boredom and fear at school. 5. Principles and methods of increasing pupils’ motivation. Teacher – pupil interaction as a source of motivation of pupil’s behaviour. Cooperative education principles. 6. Alternative approaches in education. Specifics of motivation to learn in pupils with learning disorders.

Assessment methods
The course consists of lectures and seminars. In seminars, students are acquainted with case reports illustrating particular issues. During the term, students write a seminar work on an assigned topic. There is a written exam at the end of the course.
