Course objectives
The course is intended for master students of psychology. The aim of the course is to expand students’ knowledge in selected topics of personality psychology that will be presented from the perspective of today’s theoretical approaches and empirical research. In seminars, partial aspects of the individual topics will be discussed; furthermore, texts assigned for study as well as students’ personal reflection of the given topics will be discussed.
Syllabus
  • Classes are held in six thematic blocks, always 4 lessons once every two weeks. 1. Values in the structure and dynamics of personality. Psychology of values in the context of motivation and science about character. Methodology of finding out values. Values characteristic of individual educational, professional, age and gender categories of people, or also ethnical differences. Relationship of values to interests, needs, ideals, social ideals and historical paradigms. 2. Function of will and coping with life situations. Relationship of will and self-regulation. Importance of will for achieving everyday and long-term aims. Strength of will and its characteristics in demanding life situations. Will and value orientation, or embeddedness of values. Will and ability to make efficient decisions. Basic volition traits, their characteristics. 3. Influence of media on children and adolescents’ attitudes. Introduction to main topics of research of the effects of media on children and adolescents: violence in media, gender stereotypes in media, sexuality in media, advertising. Factors affecting the degree of media effect: family, friends, socioeconomic environment, child’s personality. Methodological and ethical difficulties in examining the relationship between children and media. 4. Narcissism and personality. Various theoretical approaches to narcissism. Research of narcissism in students. 5. Personality and vocational orientation. Theoretical definition and concepts dealing with vocational orientation in pupils and students. Factors affecting vocational selection, stages of vocational selection. Possibilities of finding out vocational orientation in the period of adolescence. 6. Personality and perception of causality. Theoretical approaches to causality perception, topics of research in Czech and foreign literature. Consequences of ascribing causes on an intrapersonal level (motivation to performance, depression, stress) and interpersonal level (responsibility, altruism and aggression, acceptation and refusal).

Assessment methods
The course consists of lectures and seminars. During the term, students write a seminar work on an assigned topic. There is a written exam at the end of the course
