Course objectives
This course is focused on good grasp of the problem reproduction and integration of the contemporary society. The course introduces students to the wide social theory on these problems providing exposure to classical, modern, and contemporary theories of them. "New" concepts which dominate in the field of contemporary European social policy, social exclusion, social inclusion or social integration and social cohesion will be discussed. The course consists of weekly thematic modules that typically include textbook and other readings. Students should read the assigned chapter in books and use the IS e-learning system to read the supplemental literature, which is available electronically in PDF format.

  • Lesson 1: Introduction Lesson 2: Theory of reproduction and strategy of reproduction Lesson 3: Theory of capitals Lesson 4: Social reproduction Lesson 5: Individualization of society and social structure Lesson 6: Welfare state (a redistributive strategy of social inclusion). Lesson 7: Reading week Lesson 8: Labour market - does unite or divide us? Unemployment, marginalisation, flexibility, and flexicurity (an integrative strategy of inclusion). Lesson 9: Poverty, and social exclusion produced by poverty. Lesson 10: Solidarity, social inclusion, and social cohesion. Lesson 11: Migration. Different approaches to integration and multicultural society in Europe. Lesson 12: Spatial exclusion and. Lesson 13: Culture of poverty and underclass: new polarization of society.

Assessment methods
Each week’s study will typically involve required readings and viewing of lecture materials. Students will receive a final letter grade (A-F) for the semester based on following components: 1. Every week: annotation selected text from compulsory readings for given lesson and brief evaluation of all prescribed text for given lesson. 2. Discussion papers for Lesson 2 (Generation solidarity and its basic problems), lesson 4 (Are there unequal chance for education in the Czech Republic?) and lesson 11 (Roma in Czech Republic). 3. Critical review selected discussion paper. 4. Essay (the issue will be specified).
