Course objectives
Learning outcomes of the course are to acquaint students with the history of hermeneutics (technical and psychological), i.e. of theory of interpretation, with the basics of a philosophical and depth hermeneutics, with several psychological interpreting schools and with the role of own cognitive processes in interpretation.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will:
he will know the leading figures in the history of hermeneutics and their contribution to the theory of interpretation;
be acquainted with main themes in the field of philosophical and depth hermeneutics;
he will be familiar with the problem of translations between imitative and other human works;
be acquainted with the difference between psychoanalytical and analytical (archetypal) interpretation of fairy tales;
be able to ask new questions connected with the interpretation;
be able to write own interpretation of a selected work;
Syllabus
  • 1. Opening – basic terms, the interpretation as a problem;
  • 2. Imagination in the context of the other psychic functions;
  • 3. History of hermeneutics 1: Antic philosophy and St. Augustinus;
  • 4. History of hermeneutics 2: 18th and 19th century. schlaiermacher. Dilthey. Development of psychological hermeneutics;
  • 5. History of hermeneutics 3: Philosophical and depth hermeneutics. J. Hroch, C.G. Jung, H.-G. Gadamer.;
  • 6. Problems of difference between human works and of translation between them;
  • 7. An interpretation of a chosen folk ceremony;
  • 8. Psychoanalysis and its interpretation of human arts;
  • 9. Analytical psychology - its origin, development and key figures;
  • 10. Analytical psychology – its way of interpreting human works, an archetype as central notion of analytical interpretation, an archetype and its relation to the unconsciousness, an archetype and a collective imitation of world. Most known archetypes: the shadow, the anima-animus, the Self, The Great Mother;
  • 11. An interpretation of a chosen work (text, painting, sculpture, music;
  • 12. Space of the works of art seen by the analytical psychology;

Teaching methods
Lectures, seminaries, discussion, practical work (an interpretation);
Assessment methods
The final evaluation is in a form of colloquium. The credits are given on the basis of attendance (minimum 80%) and on the basis of the submission of seminar work (minimum 3 standard pages) on a chosen topic (eg. film, fairy tale, painting, sculpture). The theme should be agreed with the teacher in advance. The colloquium will be held in the test period in smaller groups of students (about 7 people).
