Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to: --Describe and consider the phenomenon of contemporary international migration in a global context --Investigate localized migration events in a global perspective --Conceptualize the methods of migration research and assess the appropriateness of single methods for a concrete research design --Design a qualitative research study on a migration issue --Assess the possible contribution of academic knowledge to non-academic social fields
Syllabus
  • The course consists of seven contact sessions and individual work periods between the workshops. The actual thematic structure of the sessions and individual work weeks is available at interactive syllabus of the course at IS MU.

Teaching methods
Conditions for Passing the Course
1. Participation in class (discussions, group projects) (20%)
2. Discussion Leadership (10%)
3. Assignments (25%) 5 points for each home assignment (discussion papers and peer-to-peer feedback)
4. Final paper (3,000 – 4,000 words) (45% - 10% for the draft and 35% for the final paper)
Assessment methods
Number of points per task (minimum 60 points to pass the course):
Discussion leadership 10 pts. Session 3, 4, or 5 By reservation
Discussion Papers 20 pts. Mondays at 11:00 Sessions 2, 3, 4, 5 (5 points each)
Class Participation 20 pts. Wednesdays in class Sessions 2, 3, 4, 5 (5 points each)
Draft of the paper 10 pts. Sunday, May 13 at 11:00
Peer review of paper draft 5 pts. Tuesday, May 14 at 23:59
Final research paper 35 pts. Sunday, June 10 at 23:59
