- Abstract
The goal of this course is to enable exchange students to participate in research groups at the Department of Psychology and the Psychology Research Institute of the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University. Participation in research allows students to become familiar with the processes involved in professionally conducted research and to develop their research skills. The planning of activities to which students are assigned is negotiated individually with the respective research groups. Students may analyse existing data, collect new data, take part in the planning of research strategies, work on publications, and so on. Students receive ECTS credits for their participation. The amount of ECTS awarded is based on the number of hours they spend on assignments that are agreed upon with the selected research group at the department.- Key topics
- There is no fixed timetable for this course; the schedule for students’ participation in research groups will be determined through individual negotiation. Apart from the course syllabus, there are no specific study materials. Literature relevant to students’ participation will be provided by the research‑groups when needed.
- Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
- Students who wish to enroll and take part in research should send a CV that highlights their research and writing experience to the course contact person. Their application will be forwarded to relevant research groups. If a placement is available, the student will receive an offer that includes a description of the assignments they will undertake and the expected number of working hours, which correspond to the ECTS credits they will be awarded.
- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
A successful completion of the course depends on the following criteria that will be evaluated by the respective research group contact person and/or a person assigned by them:
- Active participation in research as agreed with the supervisors.
- Timely delivery of the work assigned to the student.
- Clear communication of progress.
- Participation in group discussions within the research group.
- Submission of a final report on the student’s participation.
FINAL REPORT
Within 20 days after the student’s work in the research groups has ended, a report of no more than 5 400 characters (including spaces) must be submitted to the course contact person by e-mail. The purpose of the report is for students to reflect on what they have learned during their participation, to consider what could have been done differently by themselves, their supervisors, and the research team, and to identify the skills they contributed and developed as valuable members of the research team.
- Introduction – What did I work on? What were the topic, goals, and methodology?
- Student gains – What have I learned during my participation in research?
- Obstacles – What obstacles did I encounter and how were they resolved?
- Research‑group gains – What did I contribute to the research group?
- Future directions – What changes would make my learning more useful?
