Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide guidance on using and searching sources in academic writing, citing the sources correctly and reporting the published outcomes appropriately.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to: - Efficiently identify and process relevant academic resources, - Work with available electronic databases, - Process information effectively counting the use of information technologies, - Apply academic practices and standards in writing academic texts in the field of legal science, - Identify frequent mistakes in writing and know how to avoid them, - Locate and evaluate sources and apply the principles of publishing and reporting scientific outcomes, - Identify predatory journals and (qualitative and other) distinguishing criteria from professional journals, - Use academic sources ethically, citing them correctly, and avoiding plagiarism, - Give a detailed description of the peer review process and assessing the outcomes of research and development (R&D), including national and international criteria, - Work with the Register of Scientific Outcomes (RIV), - Known how to increase the research results visibility (especially of beginning scientists).
Syllabus
  • The course will be divided into three blocks: 1) Searching and processing relevant resources (information management, research work, search strategies and methods of effective searching in electronic information resources, specific procedures for working with the most commonly used databases, reading academic resources and sorting them, use of information technologies); 2) Writing of academic legal texts (principles of legal writing, structure of scientific article and scientific monographs, style, using of footnotes, frequent shortcomings of scientific texts and their prevention, practical recommendations - discussing concrete examples, sharing experiences); 3) Principles of publishing and reporting of scientific outputs (selection of suitable journals, scientific ethics, distinction of quality, predatory journals, peer review process, methods of evaluation of research and development outputs, working with the Register of Scientific Outcomes (RIV), registering of publications into the university database, ORCID, Research ID, other networks that identify a promote scientists.

Teaching methods
Lectures, panel discussions, analysis of specific examples and cases with discussion (demonstration of academic legal writing texts and identification of suitable procedures), case studies (e.g. model research), practical demonstrations (e.g. work with RIV), consultations.
Assessment methods
Presentation of students focused on partial issues of academic writing and working with sources in academic legal writing.
