Abstract
The aim of the course is to practice the basic relationships of general and physical chemistry as well as the structures and properties of an-/organic compounds important in the follow-up subject of biochemistry.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the basics of general, inorganic and organic chemistry in the scope necessary for further study of biochemistry.
- apply general physical and chemical laws to processes in living organisms.
- describe the properties of the major biogenic elements and compounds important in medicine, nutrition, and toxicology.
- understand the chemical properties of organic and bioorganic compounds.
Key topics
  • Properties of particles, molar quantities, composition of solutions, basic calculations.
  • Electrolyte dissociation, ion activity, ionic strength, osmotic pressure, osmolality and osmolarity.
  • Protolytic reactions and chemical equilibria, pH calculations of solutions, buffers.
  • Non-covalent interactions, adsorbents, surfactants. Poorly soluble salts, the product of solubility.
  • Reaction kinetics, the law of chemical equilibrium.
  • Gibbs energy. Redox reactions and equilibria.
  • Latin names of compounds.
  • Properties and transformations of characteristic groups in compounds.
  • Properties and transformations of carboxylic acids and their derivatives.
  • Biochemically important heterocyclic compounds, relation to vitamins and cofactors.
  • Structure and properties of carbohydrates.
  • Structure and properties of amino acids and proteins.
  • Structure and properties of lipids and steroids.
