Abstract

The course builds on the theoretical and practical instruction provided in EMAR0731c and focuses on systematic training in micromanipulation methods in the field of assisted reproduction. Instruction takes place in specialized teaching and training laboratories on the university campus under the expert supervision of experienced teaching staff.

Students will consolidate basic manual skills and work procedures, particularly in the field of micromanipulation techniques, handling reproductive cells and embryos, and adhering to the principles of good laboratory practice. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, safety, and the correct interpretation of the procedures performed.

Part of the course involves keeping a logbook in which students record the completion of the prescribed tasks.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will:

  • apply the principles of good laboratory practice, occupational safety, and quality management in a specialized embryology laboratory environment;
  • be familiar with the organization of work in an embryology laboratory;
  • independently prepare the work environment, basic laboratory materials, and culture systems according to established procedures;
  • use laboratory and micromanipulation equipment with an emphasis on precision, correct settings, and optimization of manual skills,
  • document the activities performed in a logbook and reflect on their own progress in acquiring practical skills,
  • meet the specified practical outcomes defined by the course guarantor.

Key topics

  • Principles of good laboratory practice and occupational safety
  • Organization of work in a specialized embryology laboratory
  • Checking laboratory conditions and working with laboratory equipment
  • Preparation of the working environment, media, and culture systems
  • Basic laboratory procedures in andrology (processing of ejaculate samples and evaluation of spermograms)
  • Development of precise work techniques and optimization of manual skills
  • Independent training in micromanipulation procedures using training models
  • Documentation of performance and logbook keeping

Study resources and literature
  • Bezpečnostní směrnice pracoviště
  • Provozní řády pracoviště
  • Logbook
  • Standardní operační postupy na pracovišti
  • Manuály a další dokumentace k přístrojům

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
Individual practical work in the embryology teaching laboratory during designated time slots. Independent performance of laboratory and micromanipulation tasks under the professional supervision of an experienced staff member, with a gradually increasing level of responsibility. Systematic recording of activities performed and results achieved in a logbook.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
Credit is awarded on the basis of completion of the prescribed number of hours, demonstration of mastery of the specified practical outcomes, and proper documentation of these in the logbook. Fulfilment of the requirements is assessed by the instructor or course supervisor on the basis of a review of the work performed and the quality of its execution.
